The Social Media Marketing Struggle Is A real… Struggle.

Sure running your own business sounds like a nice idea, you can set your own schedule, drink tea whenever you like, have a biscuit. However there is a necessity to promote yourself, and being brought up as a painfully modest Englishman makes the process of blowing one’s own trumpet utterly excruciating, indeed it can only really be heard by bats.

I suppose the platform that I’m most familiar with is Facebook, and I absolutely love chopping between my own personal profile and my new and rather echoey business profile just so that I can quietly shout “Look at me doing a thing over here!” to any of those few people that still use it. In fact I have no idea who i’m directing this particular marketing at? Friends? Distant family members? Some random people I met in a club when I was a teenager? It’s anyone’s guess.

I think that many of those people that used to frequent the news feed of facebook migrated over to the more simplistic picture based world of instagram. I however did not, instead deciding that people weren’t really that interested in what I was having for dinner. This has left me rather lost when knowing what exactly to post and how to reach people without getting on their nerves. Maybe I could write an ad in spaghetti.

Then there’s LinkedIn. The internet’s boardroom, you can smell the leather upholstery and hear the incessant clamouring for attention, and feel the pressure of everyone doing whatever they’re doing far better than you ever could. I tend to whisper here.

The truth is, effective social media marketing takes time, strategy, and resources. As a solopreneur (Is that a word?), I’m realising I just don’t have it all. Maybe one day when my business takes off I’ll be able to hire someone to handle it all for me!? That’s the dream! For now, I’ll be over here babbling into the abyss.
